Cigarettes and Trash Cans

Last weekend I had the privilege of picking up trash at three area parks in the city of Maudlin and, as is typical, the most consistent trash item were cigarette butts littered across the ground.  What surprised me was where I found the vast majority of them...

Right under the trash cans!

Disciple Making in Wet Cement

Individual disciple making must precede a corporate culture of disciple making.

As a leader of a developing local church, I am reminded that we are now creating culture of a local church in wet cement. But not for long.  Before many more months, the cement will harden and we will be able to clearly discern whether we have a disciple making culture or just a bunch of people attending a Sunday gathering.

The Tight Wire Act of Disciple Multiplication

One of my daughter’s favorite activities is to walk along the rock wall in front of our house separating the flowerbeds and the yard.  The rocks are small and she tries to stand on them and walk the entire way without falling off…quite a challenge for a three year old.

It is amazing as an adult attempting to walk with Christ, how much of life mirrors such a tight wire act…trying to walk from Point A to Point B without falling off to either, potentially destructive side.  Discipleship is no different.

Multiplying Disciples: Find Somebody

Whenever the topic of making disciples comes up there is one anticipated question, both from maturing Christians desiring to disciple someone and from young Christians desiring to be invested in:

"WHAT do we do?"

Why I'm Excited About Church Planting in South Carolina - Part 2

It seems for the past twenty years, in evangelical circles, discussions have centered on worship.  By this people typically mean the act of singing that occurs when the church gathers on Sunday mornings.  And because some churches have done that with hymnals and robes, while others have done it with jeans and rock bands, church-planting conversations devolved into petty discussions revolving around style of music and dress.

Why I'm Excited About Church Planting in South Carolina - Part 1

Being the "baby" in the game (about two months in) I can say that I am more excited about the future of church planting in our state than I was before I began.  There are numerous things that excite me, and I'm going to share a few of them in this series of posts, beginning with:

Reflections from Staff Retreat

Last week, the Renewal staff and elders had a chance to get away and spend some time planning, praying, and celebrating.  Here are a few reflections from our elders…

Renewal's Best Sermon Ever

Around Renewal we talk about multiplying disciples a good bit.  It is why we exist.

Multiplying Disciples: What You Can Do Today

As a church we have sought to make it our objective to multiply disciples to the glory of God.  Throughout the narrative of the book of Acts, we have consistently been reminded that God is on mission in the world through his local church to see to it that every man, woman, and child has a repeated opportunity to see, hear, and respond to the good news of Jesus Christ.

To this end, it is my desire to remind you of a few things that you can do this week to partner with God in His mission in our world through the context of Renewal Church:

The Team Expands

Several years ago, while at Southeastern Seminary and North Wake Church, I met Hugh and Hollie Carson

During this critical phase in the life of my family, God used his Word to reveal the primacy of the local church.  Also, I understood clearly that one of the most important aspects of the local church is the people that God entrusts to lead her.  While we did not know it at the time, God was preparing us to link up with the Carsonsat some time in the future.  And that time is now.
